French IBAN structure
A French IBAN is 27 characters long — one of the longest in Europe — and follows the format FRcc BBBBB GGGGG AAAAAAAAAAA KK: country code FR, 2 IBAN check digits, a 5-digit bank code (code banque), a 5-digit branch code (code guichet), an 11-character account number (numéro de compte) and a 2-digit national check key (clé RIB).
The RIB system
France uses the RIB (Relevé d'Identité Bancaire) as its traditional bank account identification document, which contains the same information as the IBAN in a different presentation. The clé RIB (2-digit check key) is calculated using modulo 97 over the combined bank code, branch code and account number. French IBANs are derived directly from RIB data, which is why they are longer than German or Dutch IBANs.
French banking sector
France's banking system includes BNP Paribas (one of Europe's largest banks), Crédit Agricole (cooperative bank), Société Générale, La Banque Postale (owned by La Poste, the national postal service) and Crédit Mutuel. The Banque de France is the national central bank and a member of the European System of Central Banks.
Testing French payment integrations
Fictional French IBANs are essential for testing SEPA payment flows with French beneficiaries, e-commerce platforms serving the French market, holiday and travel booking systems, and multi-currency invoicing applications. The generator produces IBANs that pass modulo 97 validation and the clé RIB check, matching the exact format expected by French banking systems.
